Who are we?

The Chewing Gum Action Group (CGAG) was set up in 2003 as part of a joint initiative, with the aim of achieving a long-term solution to irresponsible chewing gum disposal.

CGAG is chaired by Defra and brings together representatives from Keep Britain Tidy, Local Government Association, Chartered Institution of Wastes Management, the chewing gum industry, the Food and Drink Federation (FDF) and the Welsh Assembly Government and The Scottish Government.

Together, we are working hard to tackle the problem of gum litter in the most sustainable way – by changing behaviour.

To do this, we have developed a campaign which will incorporate a set of integrated initiatives including education, raising awareness and implementing measures to ensure the greater visibility of penalties for littering.

How do we work with local authorities?

The Chewing Gum Action Group helps local authorities tackle gum litter by providing the resources to plan, launch, implement and monitor local campaigns.

We provide paid-for advertising to those local authorities successful in their application to the annual gum litter campaign.

We book advertising on behalf of the selected local authorities through a central media buying agency.

And we work with local authorities to develop a range of local campaign initiatives to achieve maximum impact when communicating the campaign message.
